My car was broken into without damage

I have recently had the experience that the car has been broken into without any sign of damage. It has happend 3 times over the last year. The thief goes through all the compartments, takes petty cash.

I don't keep valuables in the car. I have reported it to the Police twice and they are friendly, register the crime, but I guess there is little they can do. Any ideas how this happens and if there is anything I can do in relation to the car to prevent it? I have purchased 4 wireless night vision cameras, a digital video recorder and other stuff to see if I can get pictures of the bastards. They might be reading your code from your key when you use it to lock the car and then using it to open the car later on??

I'm sure there's something that you can get that either changes the code or scrambles it or something like that?? Dont take this the wrong way, but can you discount someone pinching your keys and nicking a few quid now and then?

Do you have the 3rd 'valet's key? The small black one? If not thus would not I think register or be able to switch off. Have you questioned where you got it from? There is a security issue with these cars, where, unless the security update has been applied at the dealer the cars can be opened and a key coded to the car without the alarm going off.

I'm not entirely sure how you will be able to resolve this, as it sounds like someone has a key to your car now. If it had not yet happened, I would advise that the security update is applied by the dealer FOC for on carsand that you either relocate the OBD socket, or do what I have done, mix up the pins on it, and make a jumper 'key' from a socket and plug to 'descramble' the pins.

Look for sales receipts, credit card bills, and photos of the items that were stolen. Start replacing your stolen items. I found it easiest to just replace everything first and then submit the receipts for the replacement costs.

Create a spreadsheet of the items that were stolen. Start listing everything that was stolen, and that you replace, in an organized fashion. List the item, its original purchase price, the date you purchased it, the date you replaced it, and the amount you paid to replace it.

Yes, of course, there is. In the grand scheme of things, a vandalized car falls pretty far down the list of bad stuff. But now that it has happened, you need to take a deep breath and think. First of all, take a look at your immediate surroundings and ask: Am I safe? If you are not sure, your priority is to forget the car and get to safety. When and only when, you are sure of no immediate danger can you ask that second question: What do I do now that someone has broken into my car?

Could someone have broken into my car without damaging it?

Unless that is, you are in a big city where the police will not personally respond to vehicle break-ins. If that is the case, you will have to go to the nearest police station with your license and registration to file your report.

And make sure that the report lists all items damaged or stolen, both inside and on your car -- whether or not the items themselves are insured, you might be able to get the items back if the vandal is found. The same goes for a break-in. Be sure to take pictures of all damage, both inside and out. Pay particular attention to the surroundings as well -- were there any objects that the perpetrator left behind?

In the event anything happens to the car while at the mechanic you need to know who is responsible for paying for the repairs. Because of a hold harmless agreement, the repair shop is not always liable for damages or vandalism to the car. Make sure you know what you are agreeing to and what a mechanic will pay for before you trust one with your vehicle.

However, if a random act of vandalism or damage to your car i. If the shop did not contribute to the damage by either causing it directly or leaving the car in a situation where vanadlism was easy or even likely, then the mechanic's insurance policy may not have to pay your claim.

If the repair shop is not responsible for the damage, then your own car insurance must pick up the bill unless the auto shop has expanded its insurance to cover any damage to vehicles in its custody and control. With expanded coverage the mechanic will likely pay for the repairs to your car regardles of what happened. Without it, the auto shop will only pay if it contributed to the damage.

You are entitled to ask the auto repair shop what its insurance covers and what security measures it puts in place to protect your vehicle so you can make sure you are comfortable leaving your car. The best way to avoid the situation is to be cautious and prevent it from happening by only using trusted and safe auto mechanics. Hold harmless agreements are another way out of paying for damage for auto mechanics and repair shops that want to push the coverage for any damage to your vehicle back to your policy.

A hold harmless agreement states that you will not hold the auto repair shop liable for anything that happens to your car while it is there. Once signed, a hold harmless agreement, which can be as small as one or two sentences in fine print found at the bottom of a repair agreement, releases the auto repair shop from any liability.

Rules pertaining to hold harmless agreements can vary depending on the state law. In fact, some states only require that shops post a sign saying "we are not responsible for theft or loss of property for vehicles left at this location" in order to avoid liability. Others require you to specifically sign an agreement. You will need to discuss the auto shop's insurance policy to find out what it covers, specifically asking if it covers customer's vehicles in its custody and control.Select cars to compare from your search results or vehicle pages.

Take photos of the car at the scene, and show them along with your registration details, and any information you have about when and where it happened, plus a list of what was damaged or stolen. Burglars can be crafty and ruthless. If they have managed to steal a wallet or handbag from inside the car, call your bank and cancel your cards immediately.

Same goes for anything else they may have that could be used negatively against you. As a precaution, try not to leave anything in your car that has your home address on it. Check inside your vehicle logbooks and make sure there is no way to link possessions in your car with your house. This is especially important if you keep a garage door remote in your car. Thieves have been known to break into cars parked long-term and use a garage remote found inside to gain access to a home and steal from there.

Was your car parked in a public place? Are there people around who may have seen somebody acting suspicious? Better yet, are there security cameras nearby? It will also get the ball rolling as far as repairs are concerned, and should have you back on the road sooner. It may be that the damage is relatively minor, in which case a call to your insurance company may add unnecessary complication in future, including a potentially more expensive premium or denial of cover. If you consider organising your own repairs, take the car to a secure place and start your research before contacting your insurer.

Where damage is limited to a single window or a door lock, it may be more cost effective to handle the repairs yourself rather than pay your insurance excess. This will also be the way to go if you do not have comprehensive insurance.

Get the vehicle to a safe place and call a couple of workshops for a repair quote. Then compare that cost with the price of going through insurance.

How To Protect Your Car From Keyless-Entry Hacking

Try to not to park anywhere a thief will find it easy to hide from view while breaking in. Dark corners, spots far from other people, and things like that.

Does your car have an alarm? Is it working? Old-school methods like club locks are another type of deterrent that make it harder to drive away in a car, so if a modern security system is out of reach this is an option to consider. Another obvious strategy is to make sure no valuables are left in view from outside the car.

Petty thieves will smash a window for a few gold coins in a cup holder, or a cheap GPS unit left on a dashboard. Put them out of sight. What is a turbo and how does it work?By biggyApril 1, in Ford Focus Club. Hello all my 09 plate focus was broken into but there is no sign at all of them forcing the door open or locks. How can this be. I heard 5 hat a lad around d the corner from me had his broken into bit he sed they had a master key.

How can that be. It won't be the key they have more than likely read your code when you have locked or opened your car with some kind of scanner. It's a keys locked in kit. All our Transits in London have had to have Yale key locks installed, breakdown companies and locksmiths use the kits but they have become freely available. When we found out we just emptied the vans at night, but most mornings all the doors were open or unlocked! The focus as have ALL fords since after have rolling key codes, so a plipper scanner wont work.

If the focus was fully locked then its deadlocked and has a volumetric alarm running, so the usual wedge door ajar and reach in with wire car kits wont work pulling a door handle inside doesn't open the door when its deadlocked and should have set the alarm off when the air gap was made.

So they must have used the key to open the car, that's the only way that lets them in and disables the alarm. But they dont have your transponder chip or they would have started the engine and driven off. Now either they have a key and they have tried many focus' till they found one that opens, or they have given your reg to a dodgy dealer who has cut them a key. I would squirt a little bathroom silicon into the top of your key slot. You can easily pull it out if you need to use your key, but it may make them think you have blocked the key off and it will let you know they did indeed use that method if you find it open again.

Also make sure that your keys are either out of range or that there is no chance of you accidentally hitting the unlock button when you threw them down or something got put on top of them. Another option is an interior recording camera, wired to the dome light power, so it records when a door is opened. Or if you have dark tints on the rears, let the rottweiler sleep in the boot with no parcel shelf fitted I find what your saying very interesting. I couldn't tell you how they got in but I do now they was in there my mum seen the interior light on and dumb as she is never thought to come wake me up but when she left for work at 5.Sometimes, people have been forced to take extreme measures to retrieve keys that have been locked inside of a vehicle, some even going so far as to smash one of their own windows.

Tempered glass is treated to shatter into thousands of pieces when it breaks so that there are no large shards of glass flying in an accident. You can avoid the hassle and cost of breaking open a window and cleaning up the glass shards if you know the right way to break into your own car. Calling a professional locksmith is usually an option, but there could be a long wait or professional locksmiths may not be available nearby.

Damaging the doors or the locks themselves turns an inconvenience into a serious problem. Using a tool like a wedge professionals use a powerful airbagit is possible to open the top of the door wide enough to get a metal rod around the locking pin and pull the pin up, thereby unlocking the door.

It is important to use a technique that addresses the specific type of lock the vehicle has. There are two main types of locks:. Step 1: Use a wedge or tool to hold open the door space. Step 2: Slide the tool into the door gap.

Wedge the tool into the space between the body of the vehicle and the top of the door on the side opposite the hinge this corner can be pulled out the most. Pull the space open with your fingers to make more space for the tool to fit into.

Step 3: Keep inserting the tool until it is visible. Carefully work the tool down and into the space until it is visible through the window. Step 4: Make a hook. Now you can fashion a tool or hook to grab the locking pin. A clothes hanger works well, but you can use whatever is handy. Step 5: Open the lock using the hook. Use the wedge to open up a space large enough to fit the tool into the car.

Grab onto the locking pin with the tool and pull up on it until the door unlocks. With automatic locksthe amount of difficulty involved in unlocking them from the outside is decided by two things:. If the button or switch is somewhat accessible, then you can break into the car with relative ease.

Step 1: Identify how the locks are activated.
